Custom Amoled Display. Why is the LCD screen “extinct”? Both Apple and Android flagship phones are equipped with OLED screens, and even in phones priced above 2000, LCD screens are almost extinct, leaving only a handful of LCD phones such as the iPhone SE 2022.
When it comes to LCD, what is impressive is the feature of no strobe and eye protection, as well as the soft and non-dazzling display effect, the standard RGB arrangement, and no discount on pixels. Reasonably speaking, the LCD screen that is more comfortable for the eyes and has a higher ppi at the same resolution should not be eliminated.
First of all, we have to mention the power consumption, the LCD screen is a backlit display, resulting in higher power consumption than the pixel self-luminous OLED screen. In fact, it is easy to understand that when displaying a black interface, the black area of the LCD screen is not completely black, but the brightness of the backlight is reduced to a certain range, but the OLED screen can display pure black completely, which saves a lot of power.
Now the mobile phone processor and 5G baseband all put forward higher requirements for the power consumption control of the whole machine. Mobile phone manufacturers are racking their brains on how to save power consumption, so they naturally prefer the OLED screen.
Because of the existence of the backlight, the LCD screen is naturally thicker than the OLED screen, which is obviously not suitable for the mobile phone motherboard space.
And because of the existence of this backlight panel, it is difficult to make off-screen fingerprints. Although there is a LCD screen to make off-screen fingerprints, it only stays at the stage of the demonstration panel and has not been applied in practice.
The LCD phones you can see now use physical fingerprint recognition, Android is basically on the side, and Apple iPhone SE 2022 is based on traditional home keys, or face recognition like iPhone 11.
The problem of uneven display of backlight leads to the display brightness around the edge of LCD screen is generally lower than that of the center, which makes the four corners yellow and dark become a common problem of LCD screen mobile phones.
You can observe those digging holes around the LCD screen, as well as iPhone11 bangs near the area, it can be “forced to death” obsessive-compulsive disorder.
In addition, the response speed of the LCD screen is not as fast as that of OLED, and the drag is more obvious, which also means that the LCD screen with high refresh rate of 90Hz is similar to the OLED screen of 60Hz. In order to achieve the OLED screen effect of 120HZ, the LCD screen needs to use the high brush of 144Hz.
And the peak brightness of the LCD screen is generally not enough, so it is not easy to see the screen clearly in the outdoor sun. In order to improve the brightness, only the RGBW arrangement is used to increase the white pixels, such as the LG G7, the manual peak brightness can reach 1000nit, but this also leads to the “sequelae” of whitening the picture and reducing the panel life.
It is precisely because of these problems of the LCD screen, coupled with the advantages of higher color saturation, higher brightness, wider color gamut, faster response time, lower power consumption, and lighter panels on the OLED screen, the disadvantages of strobe can be regarded as “outweighing the disadvantages”. As a result, mobile phone manufacturers are more inclined to use OLED screens.
